This is the second major Search update of 2026. March Core Update the deployment was completed on April 8 after 12 days.
What Google said
At the time of publishing, Google has not released a follow-up blog post or shared specific goals for the May core update. The only official description so far is the dashboard entry, which says: “May 2026 core update released. Deployment may take up to 2 weeks.”
This is consistent with how Google handled the March Core Updatewhich was also launched without a companion blog post. For this update, the company used the description “a regular update designed to better present relevant and satisfying content for searchers on all types of sites.”
No new guidance came with today’s announcement.
Timeline of recent updates
About six weeks separate the end of the March core update and today’s rollout. This is what the recent timeline looks like.
This is the fourth confirmed Google Rankings update of 2026 listed on the State of Search Dashboard and the second major search update this year.
Why it matters
Some sites may see their rankings change over the next two weeks as the update rolls out. Don’t make changes to content based on early ranking movements.
Wait at least a full week after a major update completes before reviewing your Search Console data, e.g. Google’s recommendation. Your baseline should be the weeks leading up to May 21, relative to performance after the rollout is complete.
Core updates do not target specific types of content or policy violations. Pages may move up or down as Google updates its systems to keep pace with changes on the web.
Looking to the future
No timeline for completion has been shared beyond the two-week estimate. We will update this article once deployment is confirmed.
