5 ways to make money with your recipes

If you love cooking and are proud of several original recipes, you may be wondering if there is a way to sell your recipes online.

Honestly, my research revealed fewer simple options than I expected. There isn’t a single well-known website where you can just upload a recipe and get paid every time someone uploads it.

This doesn’t mean you can’t make money from recipes. In most cases, though, you’ll need to turn your recipes into a larger product, use them to build an audience, or offer recipe development as a service.

None of the ideas below guarantee a full-time income. But if cooking is something you really love, here are several realistic ways to potentially make money from your recipes.

Create a food blog

Starting a food blog is probably one of the most obvious ways to make money sharing recipes online. I’ve never run a food blog myself, although I helped start one.

One thing I know for sure is that appetizing photos count! If you can take high-quality photos that make people want to stop scrolling and try the recipe, you already have something special.

Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and short video platforms can all help people discover your recipes. It can also be helpful to focus on a specific type of food, such as gluten-free meals, inexpensive family dinners, air fryer recipes, desserts, or quick meals for busy parents.

Once your blog starts receiving traffic, you may be able to earn through display ads, affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, digital products, and partnerships with food brands.

However, blogging is not a quick income for most people. It can take months or even years to generate enough traffic to earn a reliable income.

Publishing a cookbook is an indirect way to sell your recipes. Instead of trying to sell one recipe at a time, you can bundle a collection of related recipes into an e-book, paperback, or hardcover book.

A clearly defined theme will generally be easier to market than a general collection of unrelated recipes. For example, you can create a cookbook featuring budget-friendly slow cooker meals, Southern desserts, high-protein breakfasts, or recipes requiring five or fewer ingredients.

Can you really make money selling recipes online?

Yes, but it probably won’t be as simple as downloading a family recipe and waiting for someone to buy it. The people most likely to make money usually combine their earnings with something else, like photography, freelance writing, blogging, videos, digital products, or a brick-and-mortar food business.

If you don’t know where to start, choose an idea that requires very little upfront money and test it. Create a few polished samples, see how people respond, and build from there.
