5 lessons learned from running AI agents for every search

Last year, 2.5% of Writesonic’s leads came from AI search. In March, 35% did so.

Samanyou Garg, founder and CEO of Writesonic, showed the system behind this issue in his Search Engine Journal webinar: agents reveal what has been moved on each search platform, practitioners prioritize and take action. “AI search hasn’t necessarily killed SEO, but it has made it an engineering problem,” he said.

The session covers new citation research and 5 lessons learned from the field, including the 6-step loop his team runs on every published page And the workflow that earns citations on pages you don’t own.

96% of AI citations point to pages you don’t own

Where do AI answers get quotes from? Mainly from pages outside of your website.

In Writesonic’s latest research, 96% of AI research citations pointed to third-party sources: Reddit, YouTube, forums, industry publications. A few months ago, this figure was close to 80%.

Model updates shake up the mix. Quotes from Reddit, forums, and YouTube all jumped between GPT 5.3 and GPT 5.5; the multipliers are in the session.

“You need to make sure that you’re not putting all your eggs in one basket, like your own website or a specific website,” Samanyou said.

Action item: Look for cited pages for your target prompts where competitors appear and you don’t. Samanyou gave a demonstration an agent who builds this awareness list, including the authors’ contacts.

How long does an AI quote actually last?

Writesonic has measured the lifespan of over 150,000 citations. The average is shorter than most content calendars assume.

Citation cycle: Models alternate in new sources and a model update may give up your place to a competitor. “It’s a very volatile thing, because the models are probabilistic by nature,” Samanyou said.

The exact lifespan number and the refreshing and diversifying play his team performs when the quotes change are in the session. Watch it on demand.

What goes into making an SEO agent: 4 layers

What is an active SEO agent? 4 layers: identity, knowledge, skills and tools. Samanyou has opened real example files for each.

Lesson 1 comes to the fore: hire experts, don’t replace them. His team creates expert dossiers, second-brain documents that capture a named practitioner’s way of thinking; their positioning agent runs on April Dunford frameworks.

“It’s like a team of young interns working with you. But these interns are the best in the world, they have learned from experts, have access to all the data and understand everything about the field,” he said. A practitioner approves everything before shipping.

Action item: Build a specialist agent before building a team. The session shows the expert file method, from in-depth research to completed markdown.

What is closed loop SEO? Ship, check, iterate

What is closed loop SEO? Treat each published page as an experiment: confirm that Google indexed it, confirm that it ranks or gets citations, incorporate the result into the next fix.

The live survey showed the gap: most participants either don’t measure anything, or don’t measure anything and act accordingly.

The Samanyou team evaluates each page with a business impact potential formula: 4 weighted factors that turn a 100-page backlog into a ranked work queue. The 4 factors and their weights are in the session, with both live dashboard demos.

“Diagnosis is cheap now,” he said. “The main thing is execution.” Watch the webinar on demand.

Q&A: Most useful questions from the webinar

Q: What should you automate first and what should you never automate?

Samanyou replied: First connect your existing data sources and automate the proactive detection loop. Never automate sending: “It should be semi-autonomous until a human checks and tests everything before it goes live.”

Q: On-page or off-page: What really moves the AI visibility needle?

Samanyou responded: Both, slanted off-page: “I would say maybe 60% focus off-page, 40% on-page. » Rebalance back to the page once your own pages start gaining citations.

Q: How do I create an expert file for an agent?

Samanyou replied: Build a second brain for a named expert: in-depth research on their published frameworks or their best speech transcripts synthesized into a single structured file. “It doesn’t have to be 10,000 words, it has to be structured appropriately, so the model can consume it and use it for any new tasks.”

Q: How do I know which leads come from AI search?

Samanyou replied: Self-attribution plus verification. The demo form asks: “Where did you hear about us?” and sales calls double-check: “There can be a 10-20% bias when people select something at random. But it still gives us a good indication.”
