Google’s Quality Threshold Quietly Kills Rank-Scaled AI Content


Since we’ve been able to produce content at scale using AI, graphical screenshots have been published on X and LinkedIn, usually as case studies or as part of sales materials.

The problem isn’t always that the content was produced by AI; this has always been a good differentiator to place blame on, because there are many more factors that go into whether or not content is indexed, let alone served.

The real problem is that scaling content production, regardless of method, often introduces a series of quality control problems. AI is simply the newest, simplest scapegoat for a fundamental breakdown in the content pipeline, which includes everything from keyword strategy and topic selection to editing, internal linking, and distribution.

This allocation does not, however, constitute a guarantee of sustainable performance.

Initial boost is often the result of Google’s systems processing new or previously unseen content efficiently, meaning it gets a “freshness boost.” A similar freshness boost is applied when you submit a URL via Google Search Console for indexing.

The threshold we currently face is maintaining this quality and relevance at scale, once the initial novelty has worn off and the “AI Mountain” effect has faded, leaving behind the underlying content quality challenges.

When you introduce many new URLs to your website, you are asking Google to increase your website resources and how Google allocates these resources. is well documented.

As their perceived inventory no longer matches your actual inventory, Google must choose how much of the new batch of URLs to invest in, or whether or not they want to invest in a representative sample of the new URLs (potentially based on a URL pattern, such as a subfolder), and then see how users react and interact with the content.

This process determines whether, minus the initial freshness boost, the URL (and content) is justified in remaining in the index and being served.

This concept is directly linked to exploration budget and Google’s quality threshold. If sample URLs perform poorly or fail to meet a certain quality bar once the initial novelty wears off, the rest of the scaled content often struggles to gain traction.

It should also be noted that the threshold is not static and changes over time as higher quality content is published, as noted by Adam Gentand will vary depending on the subject, as not all queries deserve to be fresh.

AI-generated content leading to an initial increase in traffic, quickly followed by a plateau or decline, makes for a good social media post, but it also highlights a key understanding that the problem is not with AI itself, but with a fundamental failure in content strategy and large-scale quality control.

AI only amplifies existing weaknesses. The “freshness boost” that new URLs receive masks these underlying problems, creating a temporary illusion of success.

The real obstacle is Google’s quality threshold, because Google must manage its resources and become stricter with what he crawls (and how often) and what is kept in the index ready to serve.

By evaluating a sample of new URLs to see if they actually engage users and maintain relevance, you avoid wasting resources. If this sample, or content on a larger scale, does not meet the current quality threshold, then assets will be removed and we will see more “Mt. AI” scenarios.

Moving from production scale to maintaining quality at scale

This is important because relying solely on AI for volume is a vanity move that ensures wasted resources in the long run.

The focus must shift from the scale of production to maintaining quality at scale.

Brands must invest in robust editorial processes, human-led strategy, and meticulous quality assurance (including internal linking and distribution) to ensure that every piece of content, whether AI-assisted or not, consistently exceeds Google’s scalable threshold. This was recently described by Google in Toronto as non-commercial content.

Failing to do so means constantly chasing fleeting traffic boosts instead of creating lasting, authoritative organic performance.
