The IAB Tech Lab has released an updated version of its podcast measurement guidelines that reflects how podcast consumption and advertising continues to evolve beyond traditional audio.
Podcast Technical Measurement Guidelines Version 2.3 updates the industry’s technical framework for measuring podcast downloads, audiences, and ad delivery using server-side log data. The project is open for public comment until August 19 before the guidelines are finalized.
The most significant change is that the guidelines now explicitly address audio and video podcasts delivered via open RSS feeds and podcast applications that rely on server-side file delivery. The update also replaces the term “listener” with “podcast consumer,” a change that anticipates broader support for video podcasts in version 3.0, already in development.
“Metrics only work if everyone counts equally,” said Anthony Katsur, CEO of IAB Tech Lab. “These updates give the industry clearer guidance for the current podcast ecosystem and help reduce inconsistencies that slow down transactions and create unnecessary questions.”
The updated guidance also includes recommendations for measuring URL prefixes, handling changes to RSS box URLs, identifying invalid traffic, and applying different measurement windows. Together, these changes aim to reduce the gaps between publishers, hosting providers, measurement providers and advertisers.
Why it matters for marketers
Podcast advertising continues to rely heavily on server-side metrics, as most podcast apps still do not provide client-side read receipts. This makes standardized metrics essential for advertisers evaluating campaign performance across publishers and platforms.
More consistent metrics are also becoming increasingly important as video podcasts gain traction. Marketers need to be assured that audience and ad delivery metrics remain comparable regardless of whether consumers interact with audio or video versions of the same show.
This guidance aims to help buyers trust reported audience figures while providing publishers and measurement providers with a more consistent implementation framework.
The project was developed by the IAB Tech Lab Podcast Technical Working Group as part of an industry collaboration process. The organization is accepting public comments until August 19 before releasing the final version.
