Philanthropy has increasingly moved away from huge institutional contributions toward smaller, more visible activities at the local level. This is usually led by individuals rather than formal organizations. Large foundations still play a leading role, but a growing share of community aid on the ground is provided by operators, small business owners and local networks who decide to become more directly involved. The scale of these activities is often modest, but the effect is rapid and the visibility of participation has become an integral part of these efforts.
This transformation is evident in Daniel Shirazi’s charitable efforts. Its involvement is not organized through a foundation or a long-term endowment strategy. Rather, it is characterized by deep involvement and attachment to one’s personal and professional life.
Shirazi attends an annual toy drive in Chicago with her father, a tradition that has become a part of her community engagement. A truck is loaded with toys, coordinated with local authorities, and drives through neighborhoods where families gather to receive them. In the past, Shirazi was everywhere, standing in the truck, handing out gifts directly to children and engaging with families along the line. Local leaders often participate and the proceedings are public. Local leaders often participate, with local media documenting the effort.
Last Thanksgiving, Shirazi organized a turkey drive in collaboration with the Miami Hope Foundation using the same strategy. This time, the effort goes beyond a simple action. The participants in the distribution were members of his team at State-of-the-art global logisticsof which he is president and co-founder. This was done with the aim of establishing a real and meaningful relationship between the company and the community it serves.
His interest in neighborhood projects grew with his presence in Miami. Shirazi contributed to a Wynwood foundation that aims to increase inner-city youth’s access to youth sports. Participation in organized sports often requires resources that are not always available. Shirazi helps reduce these barriers and generate opportunities for participation by contributing to the foundation. To raise money for youth initiatives, it has also agreed to host an annual golf tournament, which Forefront will sponsor.
Shirazi recently attended a reception for the Little Lighthouse Foundation, a Miami-based nonprofit organization that offers services and activities for underprivileged children at more than 100 partner locations across South Florida.
These initiatives reflect Shirazi’s own philosophy of charity and duty, which he does not dissociate from his role as operator. Everything he does, from his own humanitarian initiatives to his business ventures, is a way to engage in charitable work and improve his community.
